How it all comes together
You do not have to figure out your whole story before you start. Discovery gives you a place to talk about your experiences, interests, responsibilities, choices, and everyday life. As you go, you save details worth returning to in your Story Bank. StoryMap then helps you notice patterns, tensions, and connections across what you have shared and turns those possibilities into Story Directions you can explore. When you are ready to write, those directions give you something specific to say, and StoryMap coaches you as you develop it in your own voice. Then, as your college applications take shape, StoryMap helps you decide which parts of who you are belong in your personal essay, supplements, short answers, activities, recommendation materials, and other responses so the different pieces work together, reveal different dimensions of you, and build a distinctive application that is harder to confuse with anyone else's.
What you'll actually do
Start with questions, one at a time
StoryMap asks one question at a time about your experiences, interests, responsibilities, choices, and everyday life. You can type or speak your answer. As you go, StoryMap follows what seems worth exploring and asks better questions when there is something to go deeper on. This is your Discovery space.
Save what may matter later
When something feels worth coming back to, you can save it as a story moment in your Story Bank. A story moment might be an experience, responsibility, memory, detail, choice, or small part of your life that you may want to use later. StoryMap keeps track of the answer it came from.
Notice what connects
As you share more, StoryMap helps you notice patterns, tensions, and connections across your experiences. These can help you see what may be more layered, specific, or worth exploring in your application. You decide what actually feels true.
Shape Story Directions
StoryMap helps you explore different ways your experiences could come together into a meaningful application story. StoryMap calls these Story Directions. A Story Direction is not a finished essay. It helps you decide what a piece may really be about before you start writing.

Write with the level of support you need
Write mostly on your own or ask StoryMap to work with you more closely. It can ask questions, point out what is missing, help you organize and revise, suggest wording, and strengthen a section while keeping the work grounded in what you actually shared.
Your drafts save as you go, so you can return to earlier versions when you need to.

Your work stays yours
Your StoryMap is private by default. Parents and counselors may see meaningful progress without automatically seeing your private writing.
- When you want feedback, you decide what to share, who can see it, and when to take that access back.
- Sharing a Story Direction or draft does not automatically reveal the Discovery responses, Story Bank material, or other private work behind it.
- Seeing that work exists is different from seeing what it says.
